Advertise, Do not Spam

February 10th, 2008

There is a fine line between advertising and spam and unfortunately many business owners do not understand the difference between the two. This is important because while a cleaver, well planted Internet marketing campaign can help to attract new customers and keep existing customers loyal, spam is likely to alienate both new customers and existing customers. This can be extremely damaging to profit margins for the business owners. This article will take a look at a few basic Internet marketing strategies such as banner ads, email campaign and message board posts and describe how each can quickly cross the line from cleaver advertising to spam.

Banner ads are one of the most popular strategies which accompany an Internet marketing plan. These ads are usually ads which appear at the top of websites and span the width of the website. It is from this appearance that they earned the name banner ads but actually banner ads can refer to ads of a variety of different sizes and shapes which appear in an array of different locations on a website. In many cases the business owner purchases advertising space on these websites but the banner ad may also be placed as part of an exchange or an affiliate marketing campaign. Banner ad exchanges are situations in which one business owner posts a banner ad on his website in exchange for another business owner posting his banner ad on the other website. These agreements may be made individually between business owners with complementary businesses or as part of exchanges facilitated by a third party. In the case of affiliate marketing, an affiliate posts and advertisement for your business in exchange for compensation when the banner ad produces a desired effect such as generating website traffic or generating a sale. The terms of these agreements are determined beforehand and are generally based on a scale of pay per impression, pay per click or pay per sale or lead.

Now that you understand what banner ads are, it is also important to understand how they can be overused and appear to be spam. Judiciously placing your banner ad on a few websites which are likely to attract an audience similar to your target audience is smart marketing, placing your banner ad on any website which will display the ad regardless of the target audience can be construed as spam. Internet users who feel as though your banner ads are everywhere they turn will not likely take your business seriously and are not likely to purchase products or services from you as a result of your banner ads.

Email campaigns can also be very useful tools in the industry of Internet marketing. These campaigns may involve sending periodic e-newsletters filled with information as well as advertisements, short, informative email courses or emails offering discounts on products and services. Loyal customers who opt into your email list will likely not view these emails as spam and may purchase additional products and services from your business as a result of this marketing strategy. Additionally, potential customers who have specifically requested additional information on your products and services will also find this type of marketing to be useful. However, email recipients who did not request information are likely to view your emails as spam. Harvesting email addresses in a deceptive manner and using these addresses to send out mass emails will likely always be considered to be spam.

Finally, message boards provide an excellent opportunity for business owners to obtain some free advertising where it will be noticed by members of the target audience. If the products and services you offer appeal to a specific niche, it is worthwhile to join message boards and online forums related to your industry of choice. Here you will find a large population of Internet users who may have an interest in your products. You might consider including a link to your business in your signature or posting the link when it is applicable to the conversation. However, care should be taken to carefully review the message board guidelines to ensure you are not doing anything inappropriate. This technique is smart marketing. Conversely, replying to every message with a link to your website when it is not relevant to the conversation is likely to be construed as spam by other members. Once they begin to view your posts as spam, they are not likely to visit your website via the links you post.

What Self Hypnosis Can Not Change

February 4th, 2008

Self hypnosis can change a lot when done correctly. Many people use self hypnosis to stop smoking, manage pain, build self confidence and so much more. Self hypnosis works by imprinting positive messages into the subconscious part of the mind that will eventually carry over into the alert conscious part of the mind. There are however something that no matter how much you may want it to work, self hypnosis is just not going to change.

While self hypnosis can be used to enlarge your breasts, it can not be used to change your eye color. Eye color is what is known as a polygenic trait and in this the color is determined by the amount and the specific type of pigments that are present within the iris of the eye. Self hypnosis can not change these attributes to give you a different eye color. The size of a woman’s breasts however is determined by estrogen. The use of self hypnosis can actually trigger the production of the hormone in which the breasts will start to grow again.

To some of you this one is a no brainer but some people have actually thought this, so I will make mention of it. By making mention of this there will be no confusion on anyone’s part. Self hypnosis can not be used to make some one fall in love with you. There is no amount of trance session that you can do to will that person to love you. Self hypnosis is not in any way shape or form, potions, magic or any form of witchery. It is used to help improve you, not attract someone else.

Self hypnosis can not be used to give you special powers either. Some of you are probably laughing at this one, but to  be honest there are a lot of people that believe this. They believe that they can tap into special powers within their brains. Sorry but self hypnosis will not do this for your either. Self hypnosis can help you to tap into your own inner strength and help you to over come your own weaknesses but it will not give you special powers.

As you can see self hypnosis can help with some things but not all things can be done with self hypnosis. Self hypnosis is a form of therapy and used to cure or improve upon yourself physically and mentally but it is not magic. When dealing in the realm of reality we must look at this form of therapy in a realistic view point. As with any form of therapy or treatment, self hypnosis may not work to cure or improve everyone of everything out there.

Self hypnosis is in no way a magic pill or method that will work wonders for everything. What is will do is allow you to improve on the things that are within reach for all of us. We all have the power in use to change, improve and fix something within ourselves but at the same time there are some things that are beyond our limits to change.

Mind Reading Magic Tricks

January 18th, 2008

Can we really read the person’s mind? No but when you perform magic tricks, anything is possible so lets discuss some of them.

The first magic mind reading trick is called name of the dead. For this you will need a sheet of paper and three volunteers. You tear the paper into three pieces and tell two of the participants to write on each sheet the name of a person who is still alive. The third person will be instructed to write the name of someone who has already passed on.

Take note that when you cut the paper into three pieces, the top and bottom will have only one rough edge while the one in the center will have rough edges on both sides. To make people believe you can read their minds, all you have to do is give the center piece to the one who will write the name of the person who is already dead.

To make people believe that you can do this, you tell them to drop the three pieces of paper into a hat which is resting on the table or raised above your head. You then put your hand in the hat and simply feel the paper which has the rough edge and then take it out.

To build the suspense, put that piece of paper on your forehead to make them think you are sure about the sheet of paper you picked. You then give this paper to the one who wrote on the paper that has the rough edges.

The next mind reading trick is called famous names. For this, you will need to get 10 famous names from the audience and then write these down on a separate card. They are mixed and then you make a prediction of the name written on the card which will be checked by someone from the audience.

For this trick to work, you will need ten small cards or ten small sheets of paper. The 10 famous names should come from the audience so once they give out a name, write it down and then do the same for the rest.

What the audience does not know is that the first famous name written will also be written on the rest. You then put these into the hat and shake it. You now ask a volunteer from the audience to reach into the hat and give you the paper.

You put this on your head to create a dramatic effect and then say the name of the famous person aloud which will be confirmed by the volunteer. So no one will discover what you did, make sure to get rid of the slips.

The two minding reading tricks mentioned are really simple to do and anyone can do them. This just proves that magicians who perform this trick don’t really have the talent but rather pull a fast one to make people believe that they have this gift.

If you want to learn other mind reading tricks, do some research and then practice this a little then do it with a few friends. At the end of the trick, some people might really believe you have this gift which is funny especially if they knew how you were able to do it.

Performing a Vanishing Magic Trick with a Coin

January 9th, 2008

The hand is faster than the eye and this is so true once you have mastered performing the vanishing magic trick with a coin. The key to this trick is the position of the coin and for this to work; you will need two of them.

The first you have to do is lay one coin in the palm of each hand. The coin on the left should be placed in the middle of the palm. The coin on the right should be near the thumb.

In one quick motion, you should flip both hands and then let it face down on the table. You must quickly move the coin on the right hand to the left without anyone noticing then twitch the right thumb a bit to deceive people into thinking that both coins are there.

You then ask the audience where the coins are. The deception you caused earlier will make many believe that the coins are on the right but when you open it, they are wrong because the two coins are both under your left hand which they will see when you open up your hand.

This trick can also be done with the opposite hand. You should just put one coin in the middle or your right palm and the other coin near your left thumb then repeat the instructions as mentioned before.

Again, the key to this trick is the position of the coins. When you rotate your hands from palm up to down, the coin in the center stays put while the other shifts the coin to the other hand. You have to do this very quickly so the audience does not suspect what happens. If you don’t follow the proper positioning of both hands, one coin will flick away and your trick will fail.

One way to practice this trick is to imagine your hand is a table tennis paddle. If the coin is in the center of your palm, this will make sure that the coin will stay in the same place when it lands. As for the other, something different happens.

This helps you move the coin from one hand to the other so when you lift the hand containing the coin, people will see two and not one.

The speed at which the coin travels from one hand to the other varies. The more time you have to practice, the better so even when people ask how you do it, you simply say “a magician never tells how he does his tricks.”

The vanishing magic trick using a coin is just one of many tricks you can do. There are also variations which you can learn and try out so those who watch you won’t feel bad always seeing the same thing. A lot of these can be found online while there are a few that are written down in books with pictures to guide you along the way.

When you are ready, try to do this with a friend first and see if you are successful. If it works, then perhaps it is time to try this out in the presence of strangers. In any magic trick, just remember that positioning is everything and this can only be achieved with patience and practice.

Types of Magic Tricks

January 6th, 2008

Magic tricks aim to astonish and bewilder people. They are illusions that aim to entertain a large number of people or just a single person. They can be done in close proximity or with the aid of a large stage at a certain distance from its audience. However the trick is done, successful magic is one that can keep audiences wonder in awe at what has just happened.

There are many different types of magic tricks that performers practice and use to entertain and to astonish. Different magicians try to specialize in one or a couple of the different methods in order to master. Different types of magic usually take years to learn and to master. Here are some of the different types if magic tricks that magicians try to perform and master.

Stage Magic

Stage magic is probably the most popular of all types of magic. Also known as platform magic or stand-up magic, stage magic generally refers to magic being performed for a medium to a large number of spectators. It can either be indoors or out of doors. But what makes stage magic different is that it usually makes use of a number of props to help the magician perform his illusions.

Street Magic

Street magic is a form of magic that usually is performed quite randomly while walking down the street. Street performances are characterized by a lack of big props usually being used in stage magic. What props may be used by a street magician might be something that one can bring in his pockets. What makes street magic so appealing to most people is that it requires a closer interaction with the audience who may happen to be passing by the street. It may also take the magician some considerable skill to master since it may be quite difficult to perform most magic tricks with the audience being so close to see each trick or illusion.

Escape Magic

Escape magic is another form or technique used in performing that deals with a variety of tricks that involves confinement or restraints. This type of magic is also known as escapology with the performer usually allows himself to be tied up or confined into a cramped space and locked from the outside. The magic trick stems from the ability of the magician to escape from such restraints without the obvious use of tools despite seemingly insurmountable odds that he finds himself in.

Mentalism

Mentalism is another form of magic where the magician tries to create the impression in the minds of the audience that he possesses special abilities to read thoughts, predict events or control the minds of others. Mentalist feats can either be done with a large or solitary audience, on a stage or close-up.

Theatrical Seances

A theatrical seance is that branch of magic that makes use of spiritualistic or mediumistic methods for effect. It is not usually “spiritual” in nature but is merely meant purely fore theatrical purposes. Magicians who follow this method usually lead the audience to believe that they are conjuring up spirits.

Unfortunately, this is a form of stage magic that is often misused by many con artists pretending to actually be in contact with spirits and mislead people for profit.

Relationship Building to Market Your Graphic Design Studio

January 5th, 2008

You’ve optimized your web site, tuned up your web page so it’s stellar, and still you want more business for your graphic design studio.  Where do you go?  What do you do?

Go out and meet your potential clients in person!  Many of your potential clients are people oriented.  They want to feel that they have a relationship with the person with whom they do business.  That personal connection is very important so these particular clients would never dream of doing business with someone just because their web site came up on the first page of the search engine.  These are the people who want personal contact, to meet you in person, talk with you on the telephone, and get to know who you are.

It may take some time and effort to build these relationships, but once you do you’ll be very happy you did.  With clients where you’ve built a personal connection, the loyalty factor is much higher.  They’ll stick with you, giving you repeat business over the years.

But, you ask, “How do I meet and attract them to do business with my particular graphic design studio?”

Networking.  Depending on the area of the country where you live, there are numerous ways to meet potential clients in your area.  Larger cities have a lot of different networking groups.  Even smaller towns and communities have clubs and organizations which can be productive networking opportunities.  Below are some of the places you can find networking groups and the types of groups you may find.

Chamber of Commerce - Usually local chambers have networking events - breakfast, lunch or evening cocktail mixers.  You can come as a visitor the first time and sometimes more than one time.  After that they may require you to join — which is not a bad idea, if you want to build credibility for your graphic design studio.  Being able to say you are a member of your local Chamber of Commerce enhances your credibility to people who find you via the web as well.

Business Networking Groups.   These are groups that meet for the express purpose of giving and getting business.  Some of them meet weekly and some meet monthly.  Usually the ones that meet weekly are “exclusive” meaning that if you join as their graphic design studio, no one else in the group will be doing graphic design.  The monthly meetings are often non-exclusive meaning that more than one graphic design studio can join.

Other Networking Opportunities.  The Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs and other humanitarian organizations provide excellent opportunities to network while contributing something back to your community.  Alumni organizations, political and school organizations also are excellent fields for networking.

Remember though.  Relationships are usually not built overnight.  They take time.  So, don’t expect to show up once and go home with immediate business for your graphic design studio.  It may take several meetings for people get to know you and what you do.  So while it takes some effort on the front end, the clients you’ll get, will stay with you longer, because they know you and see you on a regular basis.

Where to Find Graphic Design Jobs

December 10th, 2007

Whether you are just out of school or simply feeling ready for something new, good graphic design jobs abound.  We are living in a visual society; most of us spend hours on the internet perusing site after site.  Every one of these sites has visuals, and those visuals were designed by someone.  That someone could be you.  And even if you don’t want to explore graphic design jobs centered around the web, there are so many other areas, packaging, print design, advertising, marketing and within all of these areas there are graphic design jobs that you may be able to fill.

Where do I start? Start looking on the internet. Enter “graphic design jobs” into your favorite search engine and start exploring. You’ll find many different types of sites - almost all involve job searches by type of job and location.  If you want to apply for any of these jobs you will need your resume and portfolio. So be ready.  Some will be standard job search sites and others will be professional organizations. Spend some time just looking through the sites and saving sites that you will want to return to. I recommend making a “graphic design jobs search” folder in the “favorites” or “bookmarks” section of your browser. Use this when you save the links you want to return to.

If you are a member of a professional organization this is a great place to go first.  As a student you can join reasonably. Often there are o associate memberships that are also economical.   Being a member of a professional organization also looks good and adds credibility on your resume.

Preparing for your graphic design jobs search.

You know where you want to go.  Now you need to get ready.  Is your resume ready?  You can find sites on the internet that show you how to write resumes and give you guidelines for assessing the one you currently have.  If you think you need more experience to include in your resume, volunteer to do some jobs for non-profit organizations.  Make sure you do an excellent job and ask them if they will be a reference you can include on your resume.

You will also need a portfolio in your search for graphic design jobs.  There are several kinds of portfolios - paper, web and DVD/CD portfolios.  Again, you can learn a lot about refining your portfolio by searching the internet for information about designing a portfolio.  Many of the job search sites, especially professional organizations allow you to upload your portfolio to their site, along with your resume.  With others you can post your resume, but not the portfolio.

It may be worth the time and money to have your own web site so that you can put a link to your portfolio in your resume.  If your search for graphic design jobs includes web design, then make sure that your web site is a reflection of the work that you can do in this area.  Take time with it.  Keep refining and changing it.  Ask people to view it and give you comments, especially past instructors or mentors.  In fact, it’s a good idea to have your present or past instructors or mentors review all your job search materials, resume, portfolio, DVD/CD, and web site.

Now, you are ready to find graphic design jobs that fit your skills and talent.

Which of the Many Graphic Design Studios is A Fit for My Firm?

November 4th, 2007

Your goal is to find just the right graphic design studio, so here’s a plan.  Do a search for graphic design studios, and even localizing it for your area, there will the tons of responses. And, in today’s internet world, it’s not necessary for the firm to the local. That only broadens the scope of what’s available to you and increases the difficulty of making a decision.

So, how do you choose?  Look first at what you need and it will be much easier.

Being clear about what you want and need, and able to clearly communicate that, will make it much easier to see which of the graphic design studios is a fit.  Are you looking to focus your marketing efforts on print or the web.  Do you already have a logo or do you need one?  What about CD or DVD production?  Make a clear list of what you want.

Who are your customers?  Perspective graphic design studios will need to know all about your target audience, so be ready to answer the “who”, “what”, “where”, “why”, and “how” questions about them.  Define your potential and current clients in terms of their demographics such as age range, income range, ethnicity, lifestyle, professional focus (if applicable), education, home ownership, and mobility.

What are the reasons they buy your product or services.  What pains or problems do they experience and what solutions does your product or service offer?   What are the inherent benefits to the customer of buying your product or service?

How does your target audience use your product or service?  What were your past marketing efforts?  Why did your past marketing efforts work, and why not?  If you don’t know, that’s okay.  Bring along your past marketing materials and ask your candidates what they think.   This is another way to assess whether or not you want to work with a particular studio.

Knowing your product or service, your market and what it is you want is just half the equation.  The other half is what you are looking for.  Here are some simple questions. You can rank the candidates on each of these on a 1 to 5 scale where 1 is “not at all” and 5 is “Yes, absolutely”.

Do they have access to all the services I need?  You might want to make a list of the services and then rate the graphic design studio on each one.

Does the style of their work meet my taste criteria?
Do they have experience with my product or service?

Do I think I’ll enjoy working with them?  (This may not seem as important until you’re in the middle of a project.  Then it will be crucial.)

Will they give me references?
Are the references happy with the work they received?

Okay, now you are armed and ready to choose from among the bounty of graphic design studios.   Remember the ones that come up first in your search know how to optimize their web sites and if you are working on a web site, this may be important to you.

People Have Really Gone Wacky Over The Playstation 3 Video Games

October 10th, 2007

As most of you know by now, people have absolutely gone insane over the playstation 3 video game this year! Most of you have probably heard the horror stories about people going wacky, trying to get their hands on someone else’s playstation 3, so that they are not out all of that money, it is really, really sad to think that people who do such things for a video game, but it is happening, sadly enough. However, with that said, the playstation 3 is an outrageous video game to own, if you can afford it. Christmas is here and now would be the best time to give one as a gift or purchase one for yourself, they are truly great entertainment, for the entire family. Just do not go out and do something stupid to get your hands on one. If you can not afford it, just wait, the prices will eventually go down ok.

Playstation 3’s offer you a huge variety of fascination graphics and designs that will seriously blow your mind. Technology has advanced so tremendously that we now have the ability to enjoy these fantastic video games, that are highly priced, but so worth it, if you can afford it. The fun that you can get with playing the playstation 3 will blow your mind and you will be so addicted to it, after only playing it a couple of times, you will be shocked as to how much better it is, compared to the other video games that are available to you. Like I said before though, if it is something that you really can not afford at the moment, just hold off for a while, the prices do eventually go down, with any new type of video game such as the playstation 3. By then, something else new will be coming out, available all around, at high, high prices. Nevertheless, you will eventually get to have the same kind of fun with your playstation 3 that so many other people are getting to do.

Some people do not believe in video games, of any kind, I think they have just never gotten the chance to experience all of the fun that you can have by playing these types of games, they are so missing out! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that is true, but do not judge others because they perhaps, love playing video games, of all kinds! There is nothing wrong with it, in my eyes. I think that technology has expanded so very much that we can only look forward every year, for more and more, exciting new, adventurous and creative video games, for the whole family to have fun playing. It is exciting to me, to think about how these video games are changing and just trying to imagine what kind of fun we have in store for us, down the road. It is an amazing thing and if you limit your children with the amount of time being spent on them, it can be quite education, perfecting their hand eye coordination, concentration and teaching them to be more attentive and about which strategies work for different events.

Playing Video Games Can Improve Your Thinking Abilities

September 15th, 2007

There are so many people that believe playing video games actually decreases your intelligence level but I believe that playing some video games can actually improve your thinking abilities and increase your intelligence level. There are so many different video games that challenge your mind and put your brain to really good use. Playing certain video games like these gives your brain a chance to think in a way that it is not normally used to thinking. Like, quick thinking, in games like Tetris. As you play this video game, it gets faster and faster, your brain is having to work really hard to keep up with it. Many of us can not even remember where we parked when we leave a grocery store, using this part of the brain in such a way, as you do with some video games, will improve certain areas of the brain and will improve those thinking abilities that can help you in everyday life.

Video games come in all types, some are not very brainy, they just teach you how to kill things but there are many that do require logic thinking and put your brain to work having to come up with different difficult strategies in order to get through to the next level. I believe that if you allow your children and yourself to play these types of video games, you will notice a difference in some areas of your thinking throughout the day, over a period of time. Read over some of the video game reviews on the internet, many of these reviews can give you some insight on whether or not they are even worth the money, many of these reviews will also fill you in on other aspects of the video games that you are considering purchasing for yourself or someone that you love. Some people do not take the time out to review some of these types of video games, but it will really help you in deciding which ones would be more suitable for you and your family, so you should take the time out of your busy day to do so, it will be worth it.

With certain memory games, you are working areas of your brain muscles that are not typically used throughout the day, when you are performing just your same old boring tasks around the house or office. Having a great memory does not mean that you have a higher IQ, but it does mean that you are improving your thinking skills, your thinking abilities. Many of these memory video games will give you the opportunity to use that part of your brain and improve those areas that need it. It may be difficult for some people to believe this but if you are a critic, you should give it a try yourself, you might even be surprised by the results of playing a fun, sometimes tedious video game. If you do not currently own a video game such as the ones I have mentioned, you should go out today and purchase one or get online and download a free version, where you could hopefully improve some of your thinking abilities.
